Move the Needle

Before our recorded conversation about investing in yourself, Paula Mallis, Rachel Langer and I were on the phone talking about the topic and what it brought to mind for each of us. Rachel said she was only willing to invest in things that "move the needle".

I got to thinking about what I've been investing in lately, and wondering if I was, in fact, moving any needles. At this point in my journey, I have invested the equivalent of a Harvard MBA in my own growth and development. Some may think this is foolish— I could have a Harvard MBA(!), a house (or at least have made a downpayment on one), or an exotic car.

But for me, I am proud to be someone who is willing to invest in herself. It is what has lead to a total transformation of my life into one I am in love with. Just 5 years ago, my life was a lot different. We lived in a place that felt hard and restrictive, I was burned out in my work and feeling lost about what the next steps could be. I had a marriage on the brink and I was struggling with balancing motherhood and showing up for my business. I was busy distracting myself with vacations, purchases, alcohol, daycare pickup and drop-off, an endless barrage of meetings.... On the surface this all seemed normal—and I would have even considered myself happy, but deep down I KNEW there was more to life than what I was experiencing.

Fast forward five years, and I live in a place that feels expansive, with a marriage that is healing that I would describe as strong, fun, deeply generative (and imperfect). I am a mama to two kids, and I LOVE the way I show up as a mother. I coach women in business, lead day retreats by the ocean, have a mastermind for women entrepreneurs, and work with some of the world's top corporations in fresh new ways. All of this didn't take 5 years, some of it took much less.
